Chapter 9

The bat flew erratically through the night air until it reached its destination. Usually bats don’t have specific destinations unless they were going back to the bat cave. This one did, but flew erratically anyway, because this is the nature of a bat’s flight.

It swooped near the window of the house and fluttered beside it, peering inside. Fortunately, it wasn’t one of the blind species of bats or its peering would have been vegetableless, er, fruitless.

The window was closed tightly. Strings of garlic hung outside, nailed around the window’s casement.

Avoiding the garlic like it was garlic…or something worse, it searched for another entrance to the building. It flapped towards the roof, gobbling a quick moth on the way. There a small structure of brick squatted on the top. It was summer, so there was no fire inside.

Without hesitation – well, maybe it hesitated in normal bat speed, but compared to human speed there was no hesitation – it quickly popped into the opening. Then it dropped like the Stock Market during a crash.

At the bottom there was no window or grate or anything else to keep a bat out, so he pulled out of his dive and swooped into the room.
